The label I-SITE (Initiative-Sciences Innovation Territory Economy) has been obtained by Nantes Université for its project NExT (Nantes Excellence Trajectory) which is based on two major areas : health of the future and industry of the future. NExT aims to establish an innovative path in research, training and technology transfer, backed by ambitious campus life and international appeal policies.
In this context, the Labex ImmuNE aims to:
- understand the immune system and its dysfunctions in order to harness its potential for health,
- foster interdisciplinary collaboration within Nantes Université,
- improve teaching opportunities,
- communicate with the public.
The Labex ImmuNE comprises 14 core teams from the UMR1064-CR2TI, UMR1307-CRCI²NA, and UMR1302-INCIT research units, bringing together scientists with complementary expertise in immunology and immunotherapy in various medical contexts (oncology, transplantation, chronic inflammatory diseases, infection).
The Labex ImmuNE is the Nantes extension of the LabEx IGO (Immunotherapy Graft Oncology), which was granted in 2012 by the French Ministry of Research and Education following its selection as part of the “Laboratories of Excellence” call for projects under the Investment for the Future Program. The LabEx IGO ended on December 31, 2024. LabEx IGO brought together five research units (UMR1064, UMR1227, UMR1236, UMR1302, UMR1307) across western France (Nantes, Angers, Rennes, and Brest) and aimed to promote ambitious research programs in the field of immunology, leading to the development of innovative immunotherapies. The attraction of talented scientists and the emergence of new research teams with complementary expertise, such as inflammatory and infectious diseases, have enabled significant development in the discipline. The LabEx IGO has thus contributed to unifying and developing research in immunology and immunotherapy at Nantes Université, thereby increasing its national and international visibility.
Labex ImmuNE's ambition is to transform the immunology research community at Nantes Université by uniting forces around shared strategic objectives, paving the way for the creation of an Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapies. This will establish Nantes Université as a national and international leader in immunology and immunotherapies. The founding of such an institute would increase the discipline's overall visibility and attractiveness, while facilitating partnerships, industrial sponsorships and clinical developments.
The Labex ImmuNE also aims to stimulate students' interest in immunological sciences and to promote the emergence of well-trained and highly qualified researchers capable of leading future innovations in the field of immunology. The program is also fully in line with NExT's Health of the Future roadmap, the objectives of the Pays de la Loire Region's 2022-2028 Health Plan, and the France 2030 national plan.

The ImmuNE program aims to support new interdisciplinary collaborative research projects, train the next generation of scientists, and develop communication in order to structure the discipline.
One of the program's main objectives is to encourage new transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary initiatives between ImmuNE's core teams and other teams and/or scientists at Nantes Université with whom they are likely to collaborate in order to strengthen fundamental research and explore new frontiers. Research projects will be funded through competitive calls for proposals open within Nantes Université.
In addition, the Labex ImmuNE will work closely with the Graduate Program I3 (Immunoloy and Immuno-Intervention) to provide an attractive, high-performance training environment for students.
Finally, the Labex ImmuNE will develop its communications in order to facilitate international partnerships, increase the program's visibility, and improve the general public's understanding of immunology research.
